Its that time of the year, where everything is red, pink and love (ly). No its not my birthday, its valentine’s day!!!
Well no i think you took my exclamation the wrong way, I am not a fan of valentine’s day and no it is not because i lack someone to celebrate it with, hence being like those bittered single ladies. The main reason is that I do not believe in celebrating love this one day a year, when i celebrate it everyday with my baby.
Let me enlighten you on the origins of this holiday…
The feast of St Valentine is celebrated on the 14th of february every year in countries worldwide (although it is a working day). According to Wikipedia “The most popular martyrology associated with Saint Valentine was that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman empire; during his imprisonment, he is said to have healed the daughter of his jailer Asterius. Legend states that before his execution he wrote “from your Valentine” as a farewell to her . Aww guys isn’t that so romantic?? Dying for the person you love just like Romeo and Juliet, right? St Valentine day was adopted by the anglican church as well as the lutheran church. Since that day and every year afterwards, people started sending their loved ones gifts, roses, romantic goods as well as greeting cards to show them their unconditional love. Mmm.. now why hasn’t anyone sacrifice himself like St Valentine did so as to keep the myth going? Ok sorry that was gloomy but still had to say it…
Now tell me, where are you spending your Valentine’s day? I mean you must have thought of the place and reserved already since it is that only day where you are going to reveal your feelings to your loved one. If you miss that day then your relationship is doomed, so if you haven’t yet please hurry there is one day left…
My heart goes out to all the ludicrous businesses who profit from this festive day.
First of all and foremost we have the flower shops who will certainly see their sales increase on this day. Marketing wise they have already penetrated the demand, especially by sending sms messages to faithful customers as well as random people (yeah i got your message exotica!!). Second of all, all those gifts shops who have decorated their display with red teddy bears and gadgets (since the beginning of the month) will witness random walkers go in and get a small something for their girlfriends (just notice that most of those people do it out of guilt, because there is a certain pressure from society consumers). How about greeting cards? to tell you the truth i dont know why but i feel that a greeting card would make my valentine’s day perfect. I mean i feel its more intimate for me to get a card with a personal touch than a teddy bear or dinner for two somewhere, weird? maybe? maybe not 🙂 Last but not least, the culinary business will witness a casserole and dish manifesto dance on its tables. Too many advertisements every where, if its not on the internet then its on tv or through messages sent to your mobile. Sometimes I wonder how they got hold of my number and in which database is it saved in.
Now seriously, can’t a couple do what i mentioned above on a normal day? I mean i am sure you all do (though i doubt there are any guys left that send red roses randomly to their girlfriends) but admit you feel pressured to do it on the 14th of february every year!!
Oh yeah i forgot to mention something which i find hilarious. Valentine’s Day isn’t only destined to the couples, some people (worldwide) thought they’d give the single people a chance to celebrate it as well by organizing single’s night out themed pubbing and clubbing. I remember a year or so back a pub made a theme that all people taken would wear red and those who are single some other color. Now thats catchy but truthfully i find it pathetic and a desperate sign for the single! What are people gonna invent next? color themes for sexual preferences? Whatever….
So all Valentinas and Valentinos i hope you enjoy your love (Ly) day tomorrow and you get that little puppy or teddy bear you always dreamt about.. don’t forget to put that bouquet in a vase upon its arrival and wear something red for dinner.
As for me “Valentine day has no date if you are in love everyday…feelings has no expiry date…it refresh itself as long as the heart whispers to yours…H.H”
